"Eixample" literally means "extension" in Catalan; the district grew out of Barcelona's expansion plan, designed by the engineer Ildefons Cerdà from 1860, with its grid of octagonal blocks.

The district is not a uniform block: its western sector, the Gaixample, bounded by Carrer de Balmes, the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, Comte d'Urgell and Aragó, has concentrated gay bars, shops, restaurants and clubs since the 1990s, with the highest density on Carrer Diputació.

The Gaixample, a blend of "gai" (gay) in Catalan and "Eixample", developed as a gay neighbourhood from the 1990s, as a direct continuation of Spain's democratic transition after Franco's death in 1975. Barcelona's first Pride, held on the Ramblas in 1977 with around 4,000 participants, was forcibly broken up by police, before an official Pride was revived in 2008. Every August, Barcelona hosts the Girlie Circuit, billed as Europe's largest lesbian event. The Gaixample is accessible via the Universitat or Urgell metro stations.
