Los Remedios, everyday Seville — except for one week a year.

The neighbourhood's name probably dates back to 1526, when a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of the Remedies was founded. In 1575, the Carmelite order built the Convent of Los Remedios on the site of the old chapel; vulnerable to repeated river flooding, it was secularised in 1835 and largely demolished in 1844. The building of its former church was nonetheless preserved and today houses the Museo de Carruajes (Carriage Museum).

History & origins

Described by the tourist office as "an area with almost no tourism at all", offering "a local and authentic experience", Los Remedios remains, above all, a residential neighbourhood. Calle Asunción, a pedestrian shopping street "full of life", is its true heart.

Heritage & architecture

The Los Remedios S.A. company was set up in 1920 to develop the area. In 1931, the San Telmo bridge was inaugurated, linking the Plaza de Cuba to the Paseo de Cristóbal Colón. The Plaza de Cuba, on the former site of the convent, also bears the sphere marking "kilometre zero" of the Magellan-Elcano circumnavigation of the globe — a symbolic border with Triana.

Culture & living traditions

Until 1973, the Feria de Abril was held at the Prado de San Sebastián; since then it has taken place in Los Remedios, on the Campo de la Feria. For the rest of the year, this space reverts to an ordinary plot of land — a sharp contrast with the buzz of that one week. No separate festive tradition beyond the Feria was found for this neighbourhood.

Afternoon · 12pm-5pm: Local life

Lunch and shopping along Calle Asunción.

Evening · 5pm onwards: Moving on to Triana

Back towards the Guadalquivir and Triana for the evening.
